Building Resilience in Uncertainty: Evaluating Climate Adaptation Among Borana Pastoralists

Borana pastoralists of Ethiopia are highly vulnerable to climate change. Access to disaster risk management, improved herd and rangeland management and livelihood diversification were major problems forcing them to use negative coping mechanisms. A resilience project was implemented in two districts and this study aimed to evaluate its impact using quasi-experimental design. Propensity score matching showed no significant impact on use of negative coping mechanisms, improved herd and rangeland management and incomes. In this area of climate vulnerability, more frequent and adaptable evaluations are needed to course correct and tailor interventions.
